I have a problem with my computer. Recently I updated Windows from 2000 to XP Professional and now I can't see the 'Administrator' account. The account that I'm using doesn't have administrator rights. How can I configure the account that I'm using to have administrator rights?

The administrator account is still there, it's just hidden, presumably for your protection. But we can still sign in using it, and then grant your other regular, account administrative rights.
But you will need the password for the 'Administrator' account. I'll assume you have that.

In Windows XP Pro, that Administrator account is not listed on the login screen, unless it's the only account on the machine. You can still log into it, though ... by rebooting into 'Safe Mode'. Press F8 when Windows begins to boot, and you'll be given a list of boot options, one of which is 'Safe Mode'. Select that, and the 'Administrator' account will appear on the login screen.
From here it's easy. Once you've signed in as 'Administrator':

• Right-click on My Computer
  
• Click on Manage
  
• Expand Local Users and Groups
  
• Click on Groups
  
• Double click on Administrators
  
• Click on Add
  
• Enter the account name on this machine that you want to assign administrative privileges to.
  
• OK your way back out.
  

Now reboot your machine normally, and the account you selected should now have administrative access.

When I set up my machine I did set a password for the Administrator account, and then I promptly forgot it, since I never use that account. Now I need it. What can I do?

Do you have physical access to the machine?
Good.
You can reset any Windows password on that machine that you like.
And if that doesn't scare you, I really need to drive home a point.

First let's walk through what you need to do. The screen shots below are from my Windows Vista machine, but Windows XP and NT are also supported.
Obligatory caveat - this utility has been around for a while, and has a good reputation. However, as with any third party software that's going to operate on sensitive system areas, you are always at risk. Make sure you have a good backup of your machine prior to performing these operations. And of course use of utilities of this nature are entirely at your own risk.

First, download and burn to CD the Offline NT Password and Registry Editor. This is actually a highly customized version of Linux, that's designed to do exactly what the name implies: allow you to examine and edit the password information and registry of a Windows machine.
Boot from that CD you just burned. You'll end up with something like this on your screen:

Don't let all the stark plain text worry you, the process for what we're doing is actually pretty simple.
Here's the relevant portion of that screen, enlarged:

You can see that the utility has found multiple disks and/or partitions, and is asking which one I want to work on. In my case I know that the partition listed as the larger 1 (74207MB) is my Windows drive, so I enter 2 to select it and press Enter. Next:

After selecting the disk we want to use, the utility now asks us for the location of the registry. The utility has correctly guessed the location, Windows/system32/config, so all I need to is press Enter to move on.
Next it asks more specifically what it is we want to operate on:

In this case the default answer Password reset, which indicates which portions of the system are to be worked on, is the correct one so all I need to do is press Enter.
Now it asks what we want to do:

We're here specifically to operate on passwords, so once again the default answer of 1 is correct, and I simply press Enter.
Now things get interesting.

You can see here that the utility has listed all the user accounts on my machine: Administrator, Guest, and the account I actually login with, "LeoN".
It's asking which user account to operate on, and supplied "Administrator" as the default, so once again I press Enter, and we get to the reason we're here:

Now, obviously there are several choices here. My preference is to clear the password so that no password would be required to login, and of course make sure that the account is enabled. Once done, you can then login to the account in Windows and select a new password.
Use the "Quit" options and further prompts to save data to disk, exit the utility and reboot back into Windows.
Now, naturally, this has only been an overview of one type of operation. I recommend you familiarize yourself with the utility prior to using it, and review the documentation and FAQ on the web site.

So that was pretty simple, right? OK, maybe a little scary if you've never done something like that before, but you can see that it's pretty darned easy.
Reboot from CD, press enter (in most cases) a few times, and *poof* ... the administrator account password is reset and you have access once again.
So easy anyone could do it.
Anyone.
This is where you should be concerned.
Anyone with physical access to your machine can do what I've just described.
If you're in a position where folks with a motive or other random strangers can access your machine, you may want to rethink your physical security.

If it's not physically secure, it's not secure.

The ability to walk up with a CD, and "own" the machine with a reboot and a few keystrokes hopefully makes that pretty clear.

Hello All,
Ever thought of how to get into your friend’s system and see the access denied files and folders? Or ever wanted to hack into someone’s admin account? Well here is a method which exploits yet another windows bug.

1. Have you ever noticed that if you press your system’s SHIFT key >= 5 times continuously a pop up windows occurs with the name “Sticky Keys”? If it doesn’t pop up on your comp, then may be your shortcut is turned off. For enabling it, goto Control
   Panel -> Accessibility Options. In the accessibility options under the
   keyboard tab, in sticky keys , click on settings and enable the
   shortcut for sticky keys. And u can do this even with a guest account.
2. Finally if the following 2 requirements are setup on your system, then you are all set to enter into your admin’s account.

• On Pressing SHIFT >= 5 times, a pop up should appear.
• The windows System32 directory should be writable.

Concept:
When u press, the SHIFT key >= 5 times, a file with the name “sethc.exe” is
executed.  You can verify this in TASK manager (don’t close the pop up
window). This file is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder, or
where ever your windows is installed.

The Vulnerability

1. When SHIFT key is pressed >=5 times, windows executes a file named
   “sethc.exe” located in system32 folder. It doesn’t even check if its the
   same file. Also it runs with the privilege of the CURRENT USER
   which is executing the file i.e if u have logged on as a guest then in
   the TASK manager under processes, it shows your user name as guest.
2. The file executes even if u log off, and have the windows login screen is
   showed up, BUT THIS TIME SINCE NO USER HAS LOGGED IN IT RUNS WITH
   SYSTEM PRIVILEGE.

Exploitation
If u understand this much, then the exploitation is very simple for you. What we will do is that,
we pick cmd.exe , copy it at a folder other than system32, (because windows
won’t allow u to copy) rename it to sethc.exe, go to system32 folder,
and paste it. Windows will ask, “that another file exists, do u want to
replace?” and after pressing OK, you have replaced the sethc.exe with ur own
cmd.exe. Now if u press SHIFT key >=5 times, a command prompt will
pop-up.


Finally

1. Now log-off or restart. When you reach the windows
   login screen, press the shift key >=5 times. A command prompt will
   pop up with SYSTEM privilege.
2. Enter the normal commands as follows:
3. net user username /add
4. net user localgroup administrators username /add
5. And a new user called username with admin privilege will be added.

And thats it, you have admin privilege of the system and you can do what ever you want to with it.
Hiding your fake admin profile
Now you surely don’t want the real admin to track you. Here is what you will have to do to hide yourself from login screens as well as from control panel

1. Goto registry editor and open this place.
2. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList]
3. Here create a new DWORD value, write its name as the “user name” that u created for your admin account.

Thats it now you are invisible but still admin of the system. Live as admin forever and keep screwing the real admin forever.



Last but not the least (IMPORTANT)
Windows has two type of login screens:

1. Where the accounts are listed with some pictures.
2. Where u have to write username and password.

After making the hidden account u will have to login through the 2nd step only. If ur login screen is of Type 1, press ALT-CTRL-DEL twice to get the 2nd type screen.
Thats it!!!

You’re looking for information on how to clean up or fix malicious software (“malware”) associated with DNS Changer.  It’s possible that either your computer or your home router has been modified to use resources once controlled by criminals to redirect your traffic.  You can find more information about this malware on our main page:

If you think you have been affected by this malware, you do need to fix your computer.  The malware tool kits used that change your computer’s DNS settings are very pervasive.  Initially, the only way researchers could ensure that a machine was fixed was to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system from scratch.  The malware affected the boot blocks on the hard disk of the computer, so even if people just reverted their operating system to a prior backup, the malware could reclaim the PC.  Later on, several anti-malware software companies came up with fixes that removed software correctly. Some of them are listed below.
In addition to modifying your computer’s DNS settings, the malware also looked for home routers to which the computer was attached and modified their DNS settings as well.  Not only were the infected computers using rogue DNS services, but other devices in the household or office as well, including wifi-enabled mobile phones, tablets, smart HDTVs, digital video recorders, and game consoles.  The criminals would change the web content that users downloaded to suit their needs and make money.
Below are some steps to follow:

1. The first thing you want to do is make a backup of all of your important files.  You might go to a computer store or shop online for a portable hard drive and copy all of your files onto that drive.
2. Either you or a computer professional that you rely upon and trust should follow the “self help” malware clean up guides listed below.  The goal is to remove the malware and recover your PC from the control of the criminals that distributed it.  If you were already thinking of upgrading to a new computer, now may be a good time to make the switch.
3. Once you have a clean PC, follow instructions for ensuring that your DNS settings are correct.  If you’re not using a new PC, you’ll want to check that your computer’s DNS settings are not still using the DNS Changer DNS servers.  We hope to have some of our own instructions soon.  Until then, the instructions and screen shots found in step 2 at http://opendns.com/dns-changer are quite good if you want to manually set your DNS settings.  You also have the option to return to using your ISP-provided automatic settings by choosing the “automatically” option (Windows) or deleting any DNS servers listed (MacOS).
4. After you have fixed your computer, you will want to look at any home router you’re using and make sure they automatically use DNS settings provided by the ISP.  We’ll have a document for this soon.
5. Changing DNS is only one of the functions of the malware kits.  The malware could have been used for capturing keystrokes or acting as a proxy for traffic to sensitive sites like bank accounts or social media.  It would be a good idea to check your bank statements and credit reports as well as change passwords on any online accounts especially saved passwords from your applications or web browsers.

Pond Algae – Six Ways To Control Pond Algae Growth

Oh yeah!  This is my favorite part of pond maintenance.  Not!  That darned pond algae, I just hate it.  It’s always a mess to deal with.  Fortunately there are some ways to control it so that during your pond maintenance phase, the task of cleaning it up will be much easier.
By the way, did you know that there are thousands of species of algae?  Though you may never notice, over a period of time you may never have the same dominant species of algae in your pond more than twice.
Do you know that long, thin algae that is referred to as string algae?  That type, along with black algae is a filamentous type of algae.  You’ll find them attached to something in the bottom of the pond.  They usually float to towards the surface where the process of photosynthesis can occur.
Sometimes you might notice floating particles in the pond water.  While some of those particles can simply be dirt or pollen, some of them can also be planktonic algae.  This is the type of algae that actually changes the color of your water.  You know what I mean.  Has your pond water ever turned pea soup green before?  That’s caused by planktonic algae.
Some algae will be attached the walls of the pond, small rocks and even your waterfall.  This periphyton type of algae will resemble a slimy, green layer on those surfaces.  Of course all of these algae have one thing in common.  They all thrive very easily in a pond environment.
Your task is to keep their growth in check so that they do not overwhelm the filtration system of your pond.  Here’s six ways you can make the task of controlling algae in your pond much easier.
1. Physical removal – You can easily remove filamentous algae (string algae) with a small algae rake or fork.  Just like twirling up spaghetti on a fork, your twirl up the algae.  Pull it out and throw it away.
2. UV Lighting – By sterilizing the returning water after it has been through the main filtration process, you can effectively disrupt the reproductive process of planktonic types of algae.  This will help keep the water crystal clear.
3. Lighting – If you have the ability to control the amount of sun light your pond gets, you can effectively retard the growth process of algae too.  Using trees, or some sort of shading mechanism will not only be a deterrent in algae growth, but your fish will enjoy it too.
4. Nutrient Rich Water – This is about the hardest way to control algae growth.  The problems is that your pond water is almost always nutrient rich and algae loves nutrient rich water.  They thrive on it.  Well in reality, they thrive on the phosphorus portion of those nutrients.  That’s the part you can attempt to control.  If you use phosphorus removing agents in the water, you will deny the algae one of its main supplies of food.
5. Barley Straw – This is a good organic way to prevent algae in your pond too.  Floating a bag of barely straw will help increase the oxygen level in the pond and we all know algae is a plant and plants do not like oxygen.
6. Algaecides – In my opinion, these are the last resort in algae control.  I only feel this way because you are in essences adding a chemical agent to the pond that will kill the algae, and if you’re not careful, you can kill other plant life in the pond as well.  Of course the downside of a chemical treatment is every time you change water, the algae can bloom again because the chemical has been dissipated.
